“The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health.” Psalm 41:3

Sometimes our daughter gets scared: of dogs, of motorcycles, or of dentists.

Last night, I saw her demonstrate true bravery.

She woke up at 10:45pm and spent the next three hours vomiting before she finally was able to go to sleep.

This was a first for her.

Yet she didn’t scream or howl or throw a fit.

As I was holding her hair back in the throes of her , she told me, “I really don’t want to do this!” I could sympathize. I didn’t want her to be doing it either.

But she persevered.

Those were three long hours. I certainly didn’t sleep as I waited to hear if she would call for me or would finally be able to get some rest.

Thankfully, she’s improved today. She’s eaten Saltines and drunk Gatorade. The stomach fits have not returned.

I thought about how blessed we’ve been to have a healthy child. Our daughter spent her first two weeks in this world inside a hospital because she was born six weeks early. Since then, she’s only missed daycare a handful of days because of illness.

All I could do was pray. I had no medicine to take away the bug that was causing her such problems.

I could pray and sit with her in her time of need.

I pray that when I am in need, I will be able to draw on this experience to see God there with me holding in my illness and strengthening me in my weakness. I pray, too, for the faith to believe that he can restore my daughter to full health.
